UK MMA Matches to Make: Flyweight Division
I've teamed up with two of the finest MC's on these shores to discuss our dream UK MMA match-ups. Each week we will each nominate one fight in each weight class, starting with the flyweights and working our way up through to the big lads in the heavyweight division! The rules are pretty simple, the fighters have to have fought for a UK based promotion over the last twelve months, and we can cross-promote to create the fight that we'd really like to see. So I've recruited two gentlemen who have seen more MMA fights than most of us have had hot dinners!
The first gentleman is the voice of Wales, Mr. Ricky Wright. Ricky can be found MC'ing at just about every welsh MMA event going due to his popularity, when he's not MC'ing in Wales you'll most likely find hear him on the south coast introducing the fighters into the Shock N Awe cage.
Not only is Ricky one of the UK's finest on the microphone he's also unbeaten inside the cage. Fighting out of Tillery Combat Ricky currently holds an unbeaten 1-0-1 MMA record.
Second up is the voice of the south, Mr. Darren Rees. I first met Darren at Ultimate Impact Cagefighting 6 last year and was instantly blown away with the ease he can whip a crowd into a frenzy. With his distinctive voice and enthusiasm that any promoter would love to have inside the cage I believe Darren, like Ricky, is destined for greater things in the future.
So without further ado let's have a look at the matches we want to see!
Ricky Wright: It's no secret that the flyweight division is my favorite weight class in MMA and no-one was more excited when the UFC introduced the world to the 125ers. So when asked by AddictedMMA for my dream flyweight match-up I was spoilt for choice, ironic really as there are only 17 active flyweight fighters (give or take) within the UK.
The first fighter that sprung to mind is Owen "The 5ft Hero" Gayle for the simple reason that; the guy has never been in a boring fight, whether in victory or defeat. His colorful persona in and out of the cage always gets people talking. Gayle has dynamite in both hands and is as quick as lightning.
The perfect match up for the MMA Academy's, Pietro "The Pitbull" Menga.
When Menga announced he was making the drop the flyweight the rest of the division took a huge gulp. The undefeated Menga has already made an impact in the division with a second round guillotine victory over Shamsul Haque. Both Gayle and Menga would stand in the middle with neither taking a backwards step. I can see it now, whether the fight took place in Portsmouth or Liverpool all in attendance would be on their feet. So I ask the lords of Shock "N" Awe and OMMAC, make this fight happen.
Darren Rees: I'd love to see Karl Harrison and Bryan Hyslop go at it! The reason behind this match is that I've always been a firm believer that styles make fights! Hyslop has great hands whilst Harrison possess a wide range of submission skills.
Both have great stamina and it would be interesting to see who can implement their game upon the other first.
Steve Wickett: I'd like to see a newcomer to the flyweight division, Lee Russell, test himself in the division against a solid veteran in Shamsul Haque. Russell recently made the transition to flyweight at last weekend's Valley of Kings 3 event where he defeated veteran Rob Bunford in a performance that was light years ahead of his young age.
Haque is a veteran of the sport and despite a negative record he's shared the cage with some of the very best in the business. Many would agree that Haque has never been involved in a boring fight so this fight would deliver fireworks, not only that but this fight would quickly give us an indication as to how good Lee Russell's recent performance was. So if any promoter fancies putting this scrap on one of their cards you'd more than likely have 15 minutes of fast paced action that'd thrill the crowd in attendance!
Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the bantamweights next week!
