This Friday night, B.C. based promotion Battlefield Fight League presents its 12th event, live from the Vogue Theater in Vancouver, Canada. The main event features a bout for the BFL Amateur 185 pound title, as champion Micah Brakefield defends his title against Jer Kornelsen. The event can be seen live in Canada at 10:30est/7:30pst on the Fight Network. Addicted MMA got the chance to speak with the two men involved in the main event. Here is the interview with the challenger, Jer Kornelson.Addicted MMA: Thanks for speaking with us Jer. To start tell us a little bit about yourself, and your history with combat sports.
Jer: About myself, I'm a born BC boy and live on Vancouver Island, I love it here and will never move. I started MMA after working as a bouncer for 5+ years and needed something to do outside of work and the gym that was challenging. I had a few friends involved in fighting and dove in head first 2 years ago.
Addicted MMA: Have you always lived on Vancouver Island?
Jer: No I lived in the prairies briefly when I was younger playing hockey, football and baseball at a private school in SK before moving to Tofino, then Nanaimo.
Addicted MMA: What gym to you train out of?
Jer: I train out of Impact MMA under coach John Punt.
Addicted MMA: Fighting as an amateur, are you interested in perusing a pro career, and if so, how many more fights would you like before you make the switch to pro?
Jer: I'm def looking to fight at the pro level and will do so pretty quick if I win the belt, we'll decide when I'm ready as a team.
Addicted MMA: Your next fight is against Micah Brakefield on November 18th. You have previously fought him, with Micah winning by split decision. Did you feel like you did enough to get the judge's decision?
Jer: I feel that fight was very close, sure Micah controlled me and had the suplex in the first but I stuffed at least half the takedowns and reversed and defended everything he tried, although the outcome was in his favor I believe given another 30 or so seconds I could have ended the fight, as it stands, he won. And we move on.
Addicted MMA: What did you learn from the last fight with Micah, and have you prepared any differently for the rematch?
Jer: I've taken a lot away from that fight and will implement those things come November 18th. Every fighter needs to recognize the necessary improvements after a loss and I've done just that.
Addicted MMA: Do you have any favorite fighters that you like to watch in MMA?
Jer: I have many favorite fighters, to name a few GSP, Nick Diaz, Fedor ( 5 years ago lol) Brock, Clay Guida, and really any fighter that 'brings it'. I just love the sport and the combat.
Addicted MMA: How do you like fighting in your home Province with Battlefield Fight League? Do you get family and friends coming out to your fights?
Jer: Fighting close to home is great, I have a few close friends that take advantage of the good times at an event in Vancouver and the parties afterwards haha.
Addicted MMA: Besides MMA, are you currently working or pursuing another career, or is MMA a full time commitment?
Jer: I work for BFI Canada as a plant manager in Nanaimo, we process and ship sorted recyclable products for all of Vancouver Island so on top of training full time, I work full time.
Addicted MMA: What are some things you enjoy doing when you are not training for MMA? Do you have any preferred sports teams out there that you support?
Jer: When I'm not training I'm usually spending time with my gf Katie and my dog Bella or catching up with friends I don't get to see often because of a full schedule, usually hanging out watching my Canucks and having some laughs.
Addicted MMA: Since we are Addicted MMA, we always ask, what are you addicted to?
Jer: What am I addicted too... Hmm, that's a tough one haha. I'd say I'm addicted to anything that is positive and uplifting in life... Fun, adventure, living life to its fullest and working hard to make the best of it all.
Addicted MMA: And for our final question, how do you see your fight with Micah going down?
Jer: This next fight with Micah is see going down as another epic battle where two talented fighters lay it all out there, trying to implement their strengths to stay, or become the best in our division... I know I'm ready for war, and I know Micah's ready also so everyone buckle up and get ready for what will be an epic rematch for the Battlefield strap! I want to say thanks to all my sponsors and supporters BFI Canada, DBL disposal, Always Ink tattoo, Real Estate Webmasters, The Dorman Group, Mazzei Electric, Fuel supplements and nutrition, Jaguar Promotions, and Jeff Van Dam from Iron fist Athletics for the best strength and conditioning in the business and last but not least the boys at Impact for kicking the crap out of me daily.
Addicted MMA wishes Jer the best of luck in his title fight this Friday. For more information on Battlefield Fight League, check out their website,
