Ben Constantine: Looking for the Finish at UIC 8
Ultimate Impact Cagefighting 8 is almost upon us, it's less than two weeks and that means one thing.... It's time for the trilogy fight between Ben Constantine and Lee Caers. I've made no secret of the fact that this is the match I've been waiting for all year, ever since Paul Sutherland told me about the possible bout in March UIC 8 could not some soon enough. This time the men will be squaring off for the inaugural UIC Welterweight Title. With Ben triumphing at UIC 6 in the most exciting match I have ever seen, and Lee stopping Ben at UIC 7 in another epic bout this one promises to be a belter. And the best news of all is that we may be in for a five round war!! This is worth cancelling your summer holiday for!!
So I caught up with one of my favourite fighters, Ben Constantine in between his day job and training at Trojan Free Fighters and we spoke about the impending bout.
AddictedMMA: Hey Ben, how's it going? August 4th will soon be here and we both know what that means! How's training at Trojan going in preparation?
Ben: Hi Steve, training is going really well thanks, I can't wait to get in there again!
AddictedMMA: Are you still picking guys up above your head and slamming them to the floor in the most insane manner that I've ever seen? I've never seen a fighter pick his opponents up with such ease. Pound for pound you must be one of the strongest guys in MMA!!
Ben: (Laughs) I don't know about that Steve but any chance I get I'll be slamming Lee to the mat!
I spoke to lee recently and we agreed if I can throw him out of the cage it's an automatic win for me (laughing).
AddictedMMA: You'll be fighting Lee Caers for the third time at UIC 8; do you feel like you know his game inside out by now?
Ben: Yeah we both know how we are going to fight, he wants to stay on the outside and I want to get on the inside get the take down, it's no big secret.
Although he did try to take me down in the last fight which surprised me but luckily he's not too good at that.
AddictedMMA: This one is for the inaugural UIC Welterweight Title, I for one cannot think of two more worthy guys fighting for the belt. How proud are you to be competing for the promotions very first title belt?
Ben: Yeah I'm very proud to be fighting for the belt and for UIC. Paul and Dan have done a fantastic job with the promotion and bringing it to a bigger venue, it's a pleasure to fight at UIC. Definitely the best run show I've been on by far.
AddictedMMA: I know you're confident, if you weren't there wouldn't be any point in turning up on fight night; but are you confident enough to offer a prediction on how the fight will go?
Ben: Yeah I want the finish TKO, KO, submission I don't care, he finished me last time which really pissed me off, and really don't want to fight for five rounds!
So I'll be, as always pushing the action for the finish, but i'm not expecting it to be easy Lee is a very tough guy and is always dangerous. But I think a third round stoppage.
AddictedMMA: I've asked Lee this question as well and I'd like to put it to you as well. Obviously being a part of the fight it's harder to gauge how good it is, but do you realise how incredible the first two fights have been?? I've been on the edge of my seat for all five and a half rounds so far, at one point I got so embroiled in it I forgot to take my notes!
Ben: Ummm not really I just think Lee and I make for a very entertaining fight. It's a hell of a fun time when i'm in there with him, when he's not choking me out that is.
AddictedMMA: UIC 8 is stacked with some insanely good looking fights which is a testament to Paul Sutherland's matchmaking abilities. Apart from your own which fight are you looking forward to the most?
Ben: I was reading some of your other interviews and saw this question and had a good look at the card. There is just so many i'm looking forward to, I love watching Sam (Mensah) fight because he's all action and looking to behead his opponent, Bruno (Marques) and Ant (Ferguson) looks to be a war. Bruno loves to bang!
AddictedMMA: Is there anyone you'd like to thank or send a shout out to?
Ben: To all the boys at Trojan for the sparring, Alan Bryan Forthe Conditioning, Matt Ewin for destroying my legs. And all the coaches, it's such a great team to be a part of.
AddictedMMA: And our signature question.... Outside of MMA what is Ben Constantine Addicted to?
Ben: Well it's definitely not dieting!! Absolute crock of sh*t!!
AddictedMMA: Thanks for your time Ben and good luck for August 4th.
Ben: Thanks Steve, see you on the 4th.
