Doctor: Chael Sonnen Is On TRT Because He Abused Steroids In The Past

There is a very thin line between bravery and stupidity. And at the end of this story, i'll leave it to you Addicts to decide whether Dr Jonathan Benjamin has crossed that line.

Dr Jonathan Benjamin is medical proffesional who often answers questions and writes pieces for MMAJunkie.com, usually writing about current issues like fighters being choked out without tapping, injuries suffered inside the cage, and the Performance Enchancing Drug (PED) problem doing the rounds in our wonderful sport.

In a discussion with Stephie Daniels of Bloody Elbow.com, Benjamin spoke about the current Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) situation, and had this to say about Chael Sonnen, who uses the controversial treatment due to his Hypogonadism.

"Was Chael Sonnen a big time collegiate wrestler? Yes he was. I'm going to opine and say to you, there's no way in the world you get to the level of collegiate wrestling that Chael Sonnen was at, with hypogonadism. Let me explain to you why. Hypogonadism means that the testes did not produce enough testosterone for one to normally mature. He wasn't on TRT as a teenager. He became this big, muscled up monster and NCAA wrestler with hypogonadism? Hell no. The truth of the matter is, you could never get to that level, because you're not going to have the muscle mass and strength to get you there. They're going to run you over. Your body will not allow you to develop enough muscle and strength to compete at your size. If he has hypogonadism, it's from one thing, and one thing only, because he treated himself with steroids in the past, and wrecked his testes. That's it."

Now, whilst it's great to hear medical professionals getting involved in the endless debate about PED's in MMA, it takes a very very brave / stupid man to throw an accusation the way of "The American Gangster" Chael Sonnen. The reason being that you can be 100% sure that the best trash talker in the business will already be preparing his retort to the good doctor.
